Bell Rock is named after the oldest operating lighthouse washed by the sea.
It was built in 1807-1811 by engineer Robert Stevenson (grandfather of the famous writer who wrote the famous “Treasure Island”) and is now the oldest lighthouse in the British Isles built on reefs.
The reef on which the lighthouse was built was very dangerous, because at high tide it was completely hidden under water. The name "Bell" refers to a small bell that was placed on a tree growing on the reef to warn passing ships of the treacherous reef.
